How to Choose the Right Barbeque
When the sun’s out and the days are long, nothing beats dining al fresco. You’ll find a wide selection of barbecues to suit all needs at Heal’s. Take a look at our buying guide and discover the one that’s perfect for you.
The price of a barbeque is determined by its quality, size, and which features it includes. If you are planning to use your barbeque regularly it's better to spend a bit more. Our range of barbeques starts at £30 for a portable barbeque and up to £2000 for a designer gas grill.
Gas - Many people choose gas barbeques for their convenience and extra features. With a gas grill, there are no messy coals to light, and push-button ignition gives an instant flame so you can start to cook in about 10 minutes. The adjustability of gas means that it's easier to cook food more evenly, with less risk of burning. Look for heavy duty steel or stainless steel construction. A lid will allow you to roast as well as grill. Many gas barbecues include storage space or worktops.
Charcoal - Many people believe that barbequing on a charcoal grill gives food the most tasty, barbequed flavour - although this is open to debate. The heat below the grill from glowing coals gives food a classic barbequed appearance. Charcoal grills are considered simpler to use and are generally less expensive. Heat is generally adjusted by raising or lowering the grill. Kettle barbeques come with a lid which creates an enclosed cooking area, enabling food to be braised or roasted. If you like the idea of barbequing on a picnic or when camping, a portable model is a good choice. Charcoal is relatively easy to light, but make sure you light it at least 45 minutes before you start cooking to allow it to reach a good temperature. It will burn white hot when it's ready to use. Some models feature a one-touch cleaning system and removable ash-catcher to help remove ash easily after use.
Electric - Electric barbeques are quick and easy to use - you just need to plug them in - which makes them great for apartments, balconies and small patio spaces. They are also perfect for properties where the use of coals or propane outdoors is prohibited.
If you typically cook for just one or two people at a time, you probably won't need a large barbeque grill. Barbeque cooking areas are measured in (cm²). As a rough guide, those with cooking areas up to 1800² will cook for up to 4 people; those from around 2000² to 2500² will be big enough for 6 people; the largest gas barbeques (over 2500²) will be suitable for up to 8 people. Situate your barbeque on a level surface away from any combustibles such as plants or fencing. Find a sheltered position if windy. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for assembly and operation.
For general cooking you'll need a turner, fork and tongs. When turuning meat always use tongs, never stab with a fork becuase this will allow tasty juices to drain into the fire. Create delicious meat or vegetarian kebabs with barbeque skewers. Protect yourself from heat and oil with an oven mitt and apron. When it's time to store your barbecue away - keep it in good condition with a barbeque cover.
