How To Care For Your Rug
Every room needs a focus and the visually striking rugs available at Heal's demand attention. It is important that once you have chosen your rug, you take care of it. Read our care guide for hints and tips.
Moths are a natural enemy of your rug they like natural fibres and prefer dark places, so to help protect against moths and also colour fading from bright sunlight, the rug should be lifted and turned - especially if any part is under furniture. It is also advisable to use your vacuum attachments to reach under furniture for protection. If it is necessary to store a rug for any lengh of time, take care to pack it with moth repellent.
When arranging your furniture it is wise to have some sort of protection under the legs to prevent the carpet fibres from being crushed. Avoid sharp castors or narrow legs and move furniture around from time to time.
If your rug is to be laid straight onto a smooth surface such as tiles or wooden flooring it is very much advised that a rug underlay is used to prevent the rug from slipping when walked across.
Deep coloured dyes may, in certain circumstances, transfer to the flooring underneath. We therefore recommend the use of a rug hold underlay for added protection.
Never lay a rug on a damp floor as the wet can cause rot. Always seek professional help if the rug needs cleaning.
Avoid using harsh chemicals as they may cause fading and will damage the latex binding of the rug. Loose threads can be removed by cutting and should not be pulled.
Rugs should be regulary vacuumed but never excessively. We would recommend once a week to prolong the lifespan of your rug.
On a new woollen rug it is normal to find some loose fibres which will shed.
Rugs that have a longer or looser pile are not recommend for regular vaccuming as this will only damage the pile and cause excessive shedding.
For best results, beat the rug to loosen any ground in dirt and then lightly vacumm. We do not recommend the use of a Dyson as these are particularly powerful and can damage your rug
Problem Stains:
Stain treatments require immediate attention. For fresh stains, immediately moisten a cotton cloth with cold water, wring out and lay it on the stain. Leave the cotton cloth until it is dry.
For more persistent stains, specialist cleaners have the know-how and can often remove more stubborn stains that were impossible to remove at home. Ensure the rug has dried thoroughly after cleaning.
