How to Choose the Right Bed

One third of your life is spent in bed, so it's very important that you choose the right bed for you.

Heal's beds and handmade mattresses are often said to be the among the finest available. Combining craftsmanship with the best of contemporary design has been our aim for 200 years. Heal's began as a bed making firm in 1810 and we've been designing and making quality furniture, including beds, ever since.

Visit Us In Store

It is important that you try both the bed frame and mattress together to ensure that it suits you and your sleeping style. We recommend that you come to one of our stores. Don't just lie on your back when you try the bed, make sure you try lying in the position you sleep in. And don't forget to take your partner to try the bed if you are both sleeping in it - the bed needs to be comfortable for both of you.

Size of Bed

You need to consider the size of your bedroom when deciding on bed frame size. There needs to be enough room to walk around the bed frame, and don't forget the rest of the bedroom furniture needs to fit too. Make sure there is enough space to open drawers and wardrobe doors if space is tight. Read our access guidelines for tips on how to measure your room and furniture correctly.

Take into account that most sleep experts (including the Sleep Council) agree the bigger the bed, the better the sleep. The width of the bed is particularly important if you sleep with a partner. A standard double bed (135cm) gives each person just 69cm of space, which is narrower than a single bed. Also, the average person tosses and turns up to 70 times a night, therefore a wider bed ensures you are both more likely to get a good nights sleep.

The length of bed is also important. We recommend that your bed should be 10-15cm longer than the tallest partner. As a guide if you are over 6ft tall we recommend a kingsize bed to ensure that you don't end up sleeping diagonally across the bed which is uncomfortable for you and your partner, as well as bad for your back.

Types of Beds

Heal's offers a range of different types of contemporary and classic beds:

Bed Frame: A decorative bed that would provide a contemporary or classic look to your bedroom. This type of bed will have either sprung or solid slats which the mattress sits on.

Divan: A good base to a mattress if you are tight on space. Some designs also have handy storage drawers.

Storage Bed: Also known as ottoman beds, these bed designs have storage underneath the mattress. The mattresses are lifted using an easy-to-operate piston system that can be adjusted depending on the weight of the mattress.

Storabed: These classic space saving designs includes an underbed that easily slides out from under the main bed with legs that unfold to a full height sleeping position. These beds are perfect for children's rooms or guest bedrooms.

Sofabeds: Heal's also offers a range of contemporary sofabeds that fold down easily into either a single or double bed.

Which Mattress?

Choosing the correct mattress is extremely important to ensure comfort. In 1988, sleep expert Dr Chris Idzikowski conducted a study which found that swapping an uncomfortable old bed for a comfortable new one could account for an average of 42 minutes extra sleep per night- four times that achieved by over the counter sleep aids.
