Shell composed of seven layers of wood veneer glued together and shaped using heat and pressure.

Cushions are sewn with a zipper around the outer edge connecting them to a stiff plastic backing - attached to the plywood shells using hidden clips and rings.

The chair swivels on a cast aluminium base.

Husband and wife design team Charles and Ray Eames drew inspiration for their most celebrated design from the traditional English club armchair and - more unexpectedly - from a baseball glove. Charles Eames commented that he wanted his creation to possess 'the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt'.
