One of the most prolific and wide ranging furniture designers in the British furniture industry today, Simon Pengelly has developed products for some of the best UK manufacturers of contemporary furniture. Born in Henley in 1967, Simon Pengelly started building from a very young age “I started making furniture in my father's workshop when I was eight”. An award winning cabinetmaker by the age of 15 Simon Pengelly then graduated from Rycotewood college and Kingston Polytechnic in 1988. After working in the design studios of Conran Design group, Simon Pengelly went on to design for Habitat for three years, before leaving in 1993 to establish his own studio. With his own studio Simon Pengelly developed new ranges that he launched himself as an independent designer at the 1996 100% Design show in London. Since then he has expanded his portfolio with successful designs for companies including Allermuir, Isokon plus, MHF and Modus. ” Understanding materials and manufacturing techniques is fundamental to my approach, combined with a passionate desire to create accessible production furniture with 'soul'”. Simon Pengelly’s pragmatic approach to design has attracted briefs which have resulted in award-winning furniture that contain a wonderful mix of understated design and clever engineering, with a trademark timeless appeal and accessibility.
