Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was an American-Japanese designer known primarily for his lighting, furniture and landscape design. His career spanned six decades, and included creating sets for celebrated choreographer Martha Graham, Japanese-style stone gardens for Unesco, and mass-produced goods like the Zenith Radio Nurse (an early baby monitor).
Noguchi famously commented that ‘everything is sculpture’ and was happy to move between the worlds of art and design. He was one of the prime exponents of the ‘organic’ design movement, which became the signature interiors style of the 1950s. In 1947, he began working with the US company Herman Miller company, a collaboration that resulted in his most iconic designs - the iconic Noguchi coffee table and his Akari lights made from mulberry paper - both of which are made for Heal’s by Vitra.
