Do you need a new mattress?
The sleep council recommends replacing your mattress at least every 10 years. Ask yourself a few simple questions:
If you answered yes just once then it's time to start looking for a new mattress.
Choosing a new mattress
It's often said that there are two things in life one should invest in; a decent pair of shoes and a quality mattress. Why? Well, if you're not in one then you'll be in the other.
We advise that you come into store and try out our mattresses before you make a purchase. In store we have fully trained mattress consultants to advise you in making the right choice.
As a guideline it's useful to think about what position you sleep in most. The three main positions that people adopt are sleeping on the back, the stomach, or the side. If you sleep on your back or stomach, then a firmer mattress may be a good option; it will not dip or sag so much as a soft mattress, keeping the spine straight and reducing the chance of developing back pain.
Alternatively a mattress that moulds to the contours of your body may work well with people who sleep on their back as it offers support to the whole back. A very firm mattress can bend your spine at the hips and shoulders as it does not give at all. Remember a firm mattress doesn't necessarily mean that it will be a supportive one.
If you sleep on your side it is likely that you are prone to experiencing disturbed sleep with a lot of tossing and turning. It is thought this is because sleeping on your side casuses a lot of pressure on your body (If you think about it you are putting all of your weight on a small surface area). Therefore a softer mattress may help people who sleep on their side as it minimises the pressure to the body.
Mattress Sizing
Think about the size of the mattress you are buying. If you are 6 feet tall or over, the smallest mattress you should go for is a kingsize. Most people sleep better if they are not too crowded, if you have a partner you should invest in the largest mattress you can afford, baring in mind it will need to fit in your bedroom (and of course the bed!).
Caring for your mattress
Mattress protectors are a great way of adding extra comfort and protecting your mattress from dust mites and staining. Online we have a selection of Heal's mattress protectors including the Luxury Quilted Mattress Protector Range, the Anti-Allergy Mattress Protector Range and the Waterproof Terry Mattress Protector Range
Air your mattress when you first take off the packaging and then on a weekly basis to keep it smelling fresh and it is also best to avoid plastic sheets as these can cause condensation.
If you have a sprung mattress you must turn it regularly both widthways and lengthways to avoid dips and bumps developing.
