Ferruccio Laviani was born in Cremona in 1960. Laviani studied both architecture and design at the polytechnic institute in Milan, graduating with a degree in architecture in 1986.
Soon after, he took part in the '12 Newcomers' Memphis collection in 1986 and the 'Living on Earth' Memphis collection in 1987. Ferruccio Laviani is part of a generation of young Italian designers who came to prominence in the early 1990's when the Memphis movement made its mark on international design. Laviani went on to design whimsical, colourful and fun furniture and lighting. He has worked with Mandarina Duck, Swatch, Flos and Dolce & Gabbana and exemplifies the best of Italian design. In 1991 Ferruccio Laviani started to collaborate with Kartell for whom he has become consultant and Artistic Director.
Laviani's Bourgie Lamp revisits the shape of a classic baroque table lamp. It is rich and traditional but also innovative, transparent and ironic. The FL/Y hanging lamps are a luminous surprise, like light and airy soap bubbles with iridescent reflections. His Take Table Lamp is formed by the joining of two symmetrical parts. The two-dimensional plates each assume the shape and volume of half a lamp. The internal pleating of the lampshade embellishes the item, creating a play of light when turned on.
Ferruccio Laviani is an ELLE DECO International Design Award Winner at the 2005 Design and Decoration Awards for Light Product Design
