The designer Jonathan Adler is known for bringing whimsy and exuberance to the interiors and objects he creates. Adler’s evident passion is that of a designer first and entrepreneur second. His goal is to celebrate what he perceives as an ‘anything goes’ design world. He says that ‘Our eyes have been trained to understand a mix of styles...to make an impression and to feel new, visual juxtapositions need to be jarring’. Adler considers himself a ‘maximalist’ and he combines different styles with a sense of fun. His motto he says is ‘classical foundation, playful punctuation...it’s the little gestures...that make a home fun and memorable’. But whatever he designs it has to be perfect. ‘I have an aversion to things that are ‘just ok’ – everything that we make is the result of a passion for design and commitment to quality’.

Jonathan Adler was born in New Jersey in 1966. Adler started his artistic career early, after trying his hand at pottery as a child and then begging his parents to buy him a pottery wheel and kiln.

In the 1990’s he moved to New York and started to work in the film industry. However he realised that his heart lay in making pottery which he showed to Barneys in New York who placed an order.

In 1997 Jonathan Adler linked up with Aid to Artisans, a non-profit organization which helps artisans in developing countries to make products for the American market. In 1998 he opened a store in Soho, New York which was followed by a store in Los Angeles 3 years later.

In 2002 he launched a furniture collection and took on interior design projects. At this time his design interests expanded to include everything from needlepoint and stationery to bedding, towels and lighting.

In 2005 Jonathan Adler stores open in Miami, Chicago, Madison Avenue and San Francisco. Heal's stocks a range of quirky and intriguing Jonathan Adler objets, vases and bathroom accessories.
