"We understand each other well enough to second guess what the other thinks. Our work is different but complementary, and the common denominator is simplicity and practicality." Forming their partnership in 2000, Sarah Kay and Andrea Stemmer studied as cabinet makers, both attending Parnham College, Dorset renowned for providing its graduates with the highest level of craft skills. After graduating Sarah Kay began specialising in one-off commissions and also limited production runs sold through galleries and shops. Her latest venture sees Kay dividing her time in London, Zanzibar and Tanzania, working with a local company to create sustainable furniture pieces made from coconut wood. Andrea Stemmer designs furniture for both public and private commissions and her attention to detail and understated luxury create a simple elegance. Working in London, Kay+Stemmer together bring different qualities to their partnership and enlist a close network of the best craftsmen. Using a range of materials from solid timber to steel and leather, the pieces and spaces they create evoke an understated grace. Kay+Stemmer were commissioned through our Heal's Discovers project on their first retail furniture range and created Flow, a range of aptly named organic-styled forms, reminiscent of 50s design. The collection includes the Flow Desk, Flow Nesting Tables, Flow Bookcase, and Flow Sideboard, which are made of walnut and oak, all featuring flowing curves that give the range its name. These were followed in 2008 by two free-standing shelving units - Agnes Shelving and Edith Shelving. Agnes stands tall with five shelves, while Edith has 3 shelves with both showing all the hallmarks of a Kay+Stemmer design, every joint and design decision is considered and delivered with meticulous detail. Kay+Stemmer's most recent design for Heal's is the Flow Sofa which forms part of our Heal's Rediscovers collection to celebrate our Bicentenary.
