Textile designers see patterns that most of us miss. "Our lives and our homes are just so beige," says textile & graphic designer Mary Crisp. "Nowadays colour is confined to maybe one feature wall in one room. I want to change that." Fresh from her MA in Textile & Graphic Design at the RCA, Crisp dived into the Heal's archive for inspiration. "It's full of fabulous material. We used to be much more daring - the bold 40s and 50s designs of Lucienne Day are still so exciting." Crisp combined these bold ideas with her own passion for plants to create the woodland collection. "It's a combination of loose hand-drawn marks on a sharp background created using computerized illustration," she says. "It all looks very natural and the embroidered details give it a folksy touch I love." Her stylized trees stand tall on cushions, bedding and lighting. At just 24 Crisp is already stretching the limits of textiles, mixing in plastics and recycled materials. "Our homes are part of a much bigger environment. Change has to start with the designer".
