A giant of contemporary design, the name Philippe Starck is synonymous with New Design. Born in 1949, the son of an aeronautical engineer, Philippe Starck attended the École Nissim de Camondo, Paris in 1965. By 1969 Starck became Art Director at Pierre Cardin, then through the decades began to change the way we live - from his interior design and architecture, through to the way we squeeze lemons.

From one-off pieces to mass production, Stark spent the 80's and 90's embracing fashion and even the novelty. Of recent years, Starck’s design ethos has changed, opting to the creation of design being integral to longevity and durability.

Unlike most other New Design artists, Starck's isn't concerned with expensive single pieces. Instead, his product designs are of usable household items which Starck himself helps to market for mass production. His products and furnishings are often stylised, streamlined and organic in their look, and constructed using unusual combinations of materials, such plastic and aluminium, plush fabric and chrome.

Phillipe Starck has won many awards and accolades including, Platinum Circle Award, Harvard Excellence in Design, US - Pratt Institute Black Alumni Award, Red Dot Best of the Best Award and IF Design Award.
