Heal's Discovers Ray Sideboard by James Shaw. Part of the Heal's Discovers collection for 2012. Originally from Devon, James Shaw is currently completing a Masters degree at the Royal College of Art. James is inspired by traditional manufacturing techniques and old photos. 'I am frequently drawn to the industry of the past. And when designing furniture I often try to express how the object is made through its form or finish. I think this honesty allows people to feel a greater connection with the piece.' The design of Ray was inspired by the traditional Aga cooker. Beautifully curved edges and exposed hinge give added detail to this solid oak, painted unit. Each door conceals one internal storage compartment. 'The Aga has become a symbol of solidity and domestic warmth. I wanted to carry these values through into storage pieces, accentuating the doors, which are executed in hardwood with generous radiuses. They also make a feature of the hinges, which are usually hidden away but are in reality the key element of a door.'
